Disability Equality Training (DET)

Disability Equality Trainning [DET] is a component contained in the Second Phase of the Project Support Participation of Persons with Disabilities (OKU) that carried out in collaboration by the Malaysian Social Welfare Department (JKM) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) from 2009 to 2012. Implementation of this programs has been a positive impact on the development of Persons with Disabilities (OKU) in Malaysia, especially in terms of accessibility and public perceptions of disabled people.

DET is a participatory process to learn about disability from the perspective of the Social Model. DET is a course designed and delivered or interpreted personally by the disabled that have experience of discrimination.

DET also intended to promote an understanding about disability to help participants:-

  1. understand the causes and mechanisms that cause disability occurred such as social isolation, participation barriers, discrimination, etc.;
  2. become agents of change to create inclusive communities with proactive action.

JKM in collaboration with JICA has trained 37 OKU in Malaysia and 4 of Welfare Officer as DET coach.
