Membership of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities is a total of 20 people consisting of government agencies and individuals as following: -

BACKGROUND AND FUNCTIONS OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR OKU

National Council for Persons with Disabilities was established in July 2008, as the provisions under Section 3 of the Disabled Persons Act 2008. The Council is chaired by the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development. Council must hold a meeting at least 3 times a year.

6 Committees has been established to assist the Council in its role and functions in developing Persons with Disabilities (OKUs) in the country. Committee are as follows:

  1. Committee of Global Design and Build Environment

    Chairman : Secretary General Ministry of Women, Family and Community( KPWKM)

  2. Committe of Transportation

    Chairman : Secretary General Malaysian Ministry of Transport

  3. Committee of Quality Life Care

    Pengerusi : Secretary General Malaysia Ministry of Health

  4. Committee of Education

    Pengerusi : Secretary General Malaysia Ministry of Education

  5. Employment Committee

    Chairman : Secretary General of Ministry of Human Resources

  6. Registration Committee of People with Disabilities

    Chairman : Secretary General Ministry of Women, Family and Community( KPWKM)

FUNCTIONS OF THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Functions of the Council includes the following:-

  1. To supervise the implementation national policy and national plan of action in relation to OKU;
  2. To make recommendation to the Government on matters relating to the OKU such as support, care, protection, rehabilitation, development and well-being of OKU;
  3. To monitor the activities of all ministries, agencies, bodies or organizations, governments and the private sector involved in the implementation of national policies and plans of action relating to OKU;
  4. To recommend to the Government changes to existing laws and propose new legislation to ensure the full participation of OKU in the community;
  5. To develop programs and strategies intended to to educate the public to improve awareness of the OKU;
  6. To advise the Government on disability issues including international developments;
  7. To collect data and information and encourage research relating to the OKU;
  8. To promote the development of initial and continuing training for professionals and staff working in habilitation and rehabilitation services;
  9. To promote employment and career advancement opportunities for OKU in the labor market;
  10. To perform such other functions as may be directed by the Minister for the proper implementation of this Act.
